THE DIRECTOR

Dr. Mary A. Hermann is a licensed attorney, a licensed professional counselor, a national certified counselor, a certified teacher and school counselor, and a Gallup trained strengths-based coach. She is a professor emerita at Virginia Commonwealth University and currently teaches in the Counseling program at Loyola University New Orleans. She has taught at the university level since 1998, also serving as a professor in the Counselor Education and Women’s Studies programs at Mississippi State University and an instructor in Educational Leadership at the University of New Orleans. She also taught French, English, and Social Studies in public and private schools in the New Orleans area for 15 years.   

Dr. Hermann’s research has focused on women’s experiences and on legal and ethical issues in counseling. She has authored over 75 publications, provided over 180 presentations, and is the founding director of the Women’s Lifespan Development Research Lab. Dr. Hermann is past president of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) and co-chaired the American Counseling Association (ACA) Gender Equity Task Force, the ACA Diversity in Leadership Task Force, and the SACES Women’s Interest Network. She also served on the 2014 ACA Ethics Revision Task Force. She has earned numerous awards for her teaching, scholarship, and leadership, including being named a Fellow in the American Counseling Association.
